Spatial configurations or spaces of identification of the past continue to exist after the dissolution of the geopolitical order that produced them. We discuss elements that are part of the reconfiguration of places, namely the contribution of experiences and routines and the re-configurating role of spatial imaginations.

The digital programme facilitated an online cross-border dialogue about these questions, closely linked to history and identity: Participants aged 18-24 from 13 countries captured with their cameras and microphones (in-)visible relics and exchanged on their meaning for the post-socialist generation.

30 years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and socialist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe, this digital programme invites you, young people with a biographical link to these regions, to reflect on your affiliations with the past and explore how Soviet and East European socialism(s) are remembered.

Dr Julia Langbein leads the ZOiS project “China, the EU and economic development in Eastern Europe and Eurasia”. The research project seeks to investigate when and under what conditions China challenges the EU as a global market and regulatory power in countries covered by the Belt and Road Initiative.

At a time of the proliferation of migrant, refugee and minority protests across the world, we bring together scholars who combine a focus on migrants or minorities with that on protest, resistance, activism, social engagement. This two-day workshop will take place, situation permitting, at ZOiS in Berlin.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in the 1990s, new states with new social and political orders emerged, sparking wars, protracted conflicts and disputes over borderlines and allegiances. Among others, we discuss with Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov about issues of belonging and separation.

In this workshop, we would like to bring together social scientists who seek to systematise the ways in which we study the historical narratives citizens hold. Papers can make use of survey data, experimental approaches, structured focus group discussions, or theoretically informed in-depth interviews.

The conference approaches little-known stories of flight, deportation and migration between Europe and Asia, the experiences of coexistence and religious everyday practices of (post-)Soviet Jews from the Caucasus and Central Asia. We welcome 20-minute scholarly and artistic papers.

The workshop wishes to bring together scholars working on China’s contestation of the liberal economic order and development effects of China’s economic engagement with many countries around the world. We strongly encourage submission dealing with China’s engagement in less-researched regions.
