Sophia Winkler
Biography
Sophia Winkler joined ZOiS in September 2023 as a researcher in the ERC-funded project Moving Russia(ns): Intergenerational Transmission of Memories Abroad and at Home (MoveMeRU). In her associated doctoral research, she is conducting an in-depth analysis of the media landscape that Russian-speakers abroad are exposed to. Her primary objective is to extract historical narratives from Russian transnational media, including social media, and to unravel its intricacies, key actors and audiences.
Her fascination with Eastern Europe took root during an exchange year at a Russian high school. During her bachelor's degree in Transcultural Communication from the University of Vienna and her master's degree from the Institute for European Global Studies in Basel, she immersed herself in interdisciplinary perspectives and focused on interpretive qualitative research. Sophia Winkler has previously worked in the policy realm at the EU and OSCE, as well as on Swiss peace policy on Ukraine, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
