BMBF/ZOiS Fellowships for Ukrainian scholars

30/01/2025

The Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) is awarding different fellowships for the academic year 2025–2026.

We are seeking to fill several positions (m/f/div) for UNET Fellows

within the project Ukraine Research Network@ZOiS(UNET), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

In response to the world’s demand to understand Ukraine, Berlin-based ZOiS is awarding several fellowships to Ukrainian scholars. The goal of the project ‘Ukraine Research Network@ZOiS’ (UNET) is to stimulate research on Ukraine, to communicate it for better decision-making, and to strengthen horizontal connections in the community of Ukrainian scholars. We invite scholars to join our rigorous and supportive academic community and use our centre’s communication platforms to spread the word about Ukraine and its recent research trends among journalists, academics, policymakers and politicians.

Depending on the pool and quality of proposals, the group will be a mix of Berlin- and Ukraine- based fellows. For Berlin-based positions, there are opportunities to apply for Senior and Junior Fellowships.

What projects are we supporting?

ZOiS invites applications with innovative research proposals that focus on one or several aspects of ‘Unity and Diversity in Ukrainian Society’ and the capacities (both individual and institutional) to manage it.

In a war-affected society, social cohesion and diversity are essential for rebuilding and sustaining peace, resilience, and mutual trust. Social cohesion, the sense of solidarity and connectedness among community members, fosters unity, reducing the divisions and mistrust that war often amplifies. A cohesive society can work together to rebuild infrastructure and political institutions, provide mutual support, and address the trauma of war.  Diversity, on the other hand, strengthens this cohesion by incorporating multiple perspectives, talents, and cultural practices, which enrich and revitalise a society's social fabric. By valuing diverse voices and experiences, a post-conflict society can create inclusive policies and fair opportunities, reducing the grievances that can lead to instability, democratic backsliding or violence. Together, social cohesion and diversity empower communities to face challenges, promote healing, and establish a more stable and just society that is less vulnerable to future conflicts.

The debates around diversity use various terms and come to very different conclusions. Some people believe that Ukrainian society is as united as it has ever been; others see multiple polarities, which may lead to further escalation.
We invite social science researchers to explore these questions together.

Disciplinary and interdisciplinary projects in the social sciences that explore the societal, political, economic, cultural, and environmental consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war with a particular focus on (but not limited to):

  • Diversity, identities, and social divides;
  • Capacities and strategies (both individual and institutional) to address diversity.

The project should include the following components:

  • Empirical documenting and analysis of reality before/during/after the war;
  • Practical implications for decision-making in Ukraine and internationally.

How is the fellowship organised?

Berlin-based and/or Ukraine-based fellows are invited to work on their research project in cooperation with the ZOiS team and contribute to discussions with different stakeholders through ZOiS research communication formats (UNET events, ZOiS Spotlight, ZOiS Report, ZOiS podcast, ‘In conversation with’ interview). Each Fellow is mentored and supported by a ZOiS researcher. More information about the fellowship can be found here: Fellowship Guideline.

All fellowships are awarded for a period of up to one year. The fellowships for the 2025/2026 academic year will start on 1 September 2025.
