Bahar Baser Holds Talk on the Case of the Russian Diaspora in Turkey in 2nd ERDAM Event
On September 19, 2024, the ERDAM research network hosted an online event exploring the mobilization strategies of the Russian diaspora in Turkey. The event, titled Reconceptualizing Diaspora Mobilization in the Global South: The Case of the Russian Diaspora in Turkey, featured Prof. Dr. Bahar Baser (Durham University) as the main speaker. The discussion was enriched by the insights of discussant PD Dr. Tsypylma Darieva (ZOiS) and moderated by Prof. Dr. Inta Mieriņa (University of Latvia).
With over 40 participants in attendance, the event provided a deep dive into how Russians in Turkey navigate the complex political landscape and adapt to the illiberal context of their host country. Prof. Dr. Baser's presentation shed light on how the Russian diaspora in Turkey balances connections to their homeland with the challenges of integrating into a non-democratic regime. The conversation highlighted the differences between diaspora behaviors in illiberal versus democratic settings.
