The Ukraine Research Network@ZOiS will start in November 2022. It will connect social science research on Ukraine through fellowships for academics in and from Ukraine and link academic institutions and approaches from Area (in particular East European and Ukrainian) Studies, Conflict Studies and Migration Studies.

ZOiS and the German Centre for Integration and Migration Studies (DeZIM e.V.) are initiating the research network "Forced Migrants From Ukraine in Transnational Europe: Between Personal Agency, Civil Society And The State" (FORUM). It brings together an international, interdisciplinary team of researchers.

Victory Day, 9 May, plays a central role in Russia's politics and culture of remembrance. On the occasion of the 77th Victory Day, which is celebrated during Russia's war against Ukraine, ZOiS is compiling a selection of contributions and research results on the topic.

As part of its Journalist-in-residence program, ZOiS and the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) offer a stipend of up to three months for a journalist from Ukraine. The selected journalist will have the opportunity to continue the journalistic work at the WZB and to exchange regularly with researchers of both institutes.

Last Friday, Russia’s Ministry of Justice has revoked the licenses of a long list of organisations, among them partners of ZOiS. This decision further shrinks the space for political analysis, discussions about human rights and democratic values, and cooperation with Western partners.

On 28 February 2022, the Russian Supreme Court confirmed the forced dissolution of the human rights organisation Memorial International. This is a step we utterly condemn.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a war of aggression that we condemn in the strongest possible terms. Against this background, we have decided to suspend all institutional cooperations between ZOiS and Russian state institutions. However, in the spirit of academic freedom, the academic partnerships our researchers have established with individual researchers in Russia will continue, as far as this is possible.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the research network "Cooperation and Conflict in Eastern Europe: The Consequences of the Reconfiguration of Political, Economic, and Social Spaces since the End of the Cold War" (KonKoop). KonKoop is led by Gwendolyn Sasse, Sabine von Löwis, and Julia Langbein.

ZOiS researcher Félix Krawatzek has been awarded an European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant for his research proposal “Moving Russia(ns): Intergenerational Transmission of Memories Abroad and at Home” (MoveMeRU).
